Movie Review : Netflix's The Half Of It

“Hate is louder than Love,

But Love always wins in the end.”

Pride: a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.

The month of June, also known as the PRIDE MONTH globally has its own important significance in history which marks the revolution of the meaning of Love and Life. In 1969 June 28th , along with the members of the LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender,), community the male prostitutes and the homeless youth protested so that the queer people can be open about their sexual orientation without fear of being arrested. So, in honor of the PRIDE MONTH, The Yellow Door Film Festival presents a review on the movie “THE HALF OF IT”, which beautifully portrays the struggle of a queer person and their path throughout life.

Every generation gets its own “Cyrano de Bergerac” from the steve martin comedy “Roxanne”. Alice Wu’s new high school set to film “the half of it” represents the limitations that serve as obstacles to ingenuity in young adult movies. By the film, Wu shows the issues of race and queerness with emotional complexity. Ellie chu is the character who shows the casual racism of her small town. While also she manages to stay up with the teenagers there with her by writing essays for them and earnings for the daily needs of her n her father. She does all the work of the house and her father’s as a station master. Ellie starts writing letters for Paul ( cute but draft football player ) who likes a girl name Aster ( a girl who is into arts and books) to impress Aster Paul approaches Ellie to write love letters for her. Things went well in the starting. Just when you think you know where this is going, Wu makes sure you don’t, half of it portrays the meaning of love. There are many plotholes left in the movie according to my view. There could have been the possibility of a love story between Ellie and Paul or between Ellie and Aster. The story is left between nowhere with Ellie just saying that she will meet Aster when the right time will come.

The impact movie has left is that “love isn’t patient and kind and humble. Love is messy, horrible, and selfish, and bold. It’s not finding your perfect half. It’s trying and reaching and failing.” Love is all that you need but what is all you need?. Love is not about giving up on someone its about trying failing and again trying until you find the one.
